As I embark on this new journey I am ever aware that it is being witnessed by not only my whole family and a world of strangers; but most important, there is a pre-teen girl watching very closely.
I hope that while she’s watching she decides to pay attention and take notice of what geek culture is really celebrating. I hope she enjoys finding ways of incorporating her fandom into her daily life as much as I do, drawer of fan tee-shirts I’m looking at you, and the instant bound with anyone who understands the reference.
I hope she heeds the lessons and morals of the stories told by some of the worlds finest storytellers and finds a passion in them the way I know so many of us have.
I hope she finds inspiration in the strong female characters and role models that can be found.
I hope that somewhere she finds her Harry Potter and maybe, just maybe, it could actually be Harry Potter.
I hope she dreams of unimaginable heights, of space and technology, of magic, and royalty.
And you simply can’t watch/read science fiction without learning that if you’re very clever and determined you can save all of mankind at the last possible moment; believe me, it happens all the time.
