Captain Marvel Trailer Finally Lands And It Is Amazing

Captain Marvel

Marvel

The highly anticipated trailer for the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, Marvel’s first solo woman-led film, has finally been released. As a die-hard member of the Carol Corps, let me be the first to assure you that it is indeed absolutely amazing. For a short trailer, it packed in a lot, including action, adventure, mysterious origins, and even aliens. I mean, what more could you want!

Powers and a Faux-Hawk and Blockbuster – Oh My!

Mysterious origins, a half-remembered life, fights in space, and the destruction of a late 80s/early 90s era Blockbuster are just a few of the best parts of this trailer. Despite the uncertainty about Carol’s past, we know that she is keen on defending the Earth from the Skrull forces who threaten it (that or she really enjoys punching old women on public transit). Fans also get a hint at her connection with Nick Fury. The whole thing is rounded out by a few shots of Jude Law’s character – someone Marvel is hoping will be mysterious but who we all know is the original Mar-Vell.

As a huge fan of the character, the trailer gave me chills as it is. Then, a fan posted the footage with Ariana Grande’s “God is a Woman” as the score. My chills got chills.

Carol and Kelly

While there have been several characters throughout Marvel Comics history, this film focuses on the Carol Danvers incarnation. Formerly Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers was introduced as Captain Marvel in 2012 in Kelly Sue DeConnick’s incredible run. Before DeConnick took over, Danvers was not the popular character she is today, with an entire subgroup of fans (called the Carol Corps) devoted to her. Back then, she was an overlooked character – Marvel was even reluctant to spend money on her costume design at first.

This all changed with the very first issue penned by DeConnick. She stayed on the title for three years, departing in 2015 but definitely leaving her mark on the character. The film even includes notable references to her run, including the ever-popular phrase (and eventual title of a collected issue), “Higher, Further, Faster” as well as her iconic helmet/faux-hawk costume which was designed by Jamie McKelvie and first featured in DeConnick’s run. Fans have also noticed Carol’s cat making an appearance in the poster. The cat, for the record, is named Chewie, because Carol is amazingly and appropriately a huge Star Wars nerd.

Details About the Film

Captain Marvel hits theatres on March 8, 2019, which is also International Women’s Day. It was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, both of whom share writing credits with Meg LeFauve, Nicole Pearlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Liz Flahive, and Carly Mensch. Oscar-award winner Brie Larson stars in the title role, with Gemma Chan, Lashana Lynch, Djimon Housou, Samuel L. Jackson, and Clark Gregg in supporting roles.
