Canadian Cancer Society Dry Feb 2018 Has Begun

Dry Feb Banner

Last year I wanted to participate in The Canadian Cancer Society’s Dry Feb Initiative getting in on the action in it’s very first year.

9, 585 people are going dry this year having raised $216,709 so far.

This year my desire to participate was even stronger;

tomorrow is my father’s last radiation treatment.

This Intuitive really appealed to me on a few levels;

  • A few people that I love have been deeply affected by alcoholism
  • I was trying to acknowledge loss suffered by friends
  • And  honour hardship faced by family

What Dry Feb Means To Me

I don’t drink frequently but there was a time where I consumed more alcohol than would be considered healthy. A few years ago I watched two people that I care for struggle immensely with the lure of alcohol. The effects of their struggle had wide rippling effects. Seeing this prompted me to embark on my first 30 days of conscious sobriety. It was eye opening to see that it was not the struggle I had feared it would be. Since I have tried to practice a month of intentional sobriety once a year. This is our fourth year living in our house and we love it here, which has lead to fewer and fewer nights out so it’s not unreasonable to think I might not have booze for a month without intention.

This is different.

Making an intentional decision to abstain from drinking for the four weeks of February.  Deciding that showing your support/solidarity carries greater importance to you than have a few bevies with your buddies while watching the SuperBowl or enjoying a glass of wine with your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day.

Abstaining from alcohol for a month may not be significant when compared to what a cancer patient endures but we all find our own ways to deal with the dents left by cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Dry Feb Initiative spoke to me, if it speaks to you than please join me. If it’s not your cup of tea but you want to donate than that is fantastic as well. Even just getting the word out helps.

I’m excited to keep you all updated as my month progresses.
