Being part of a fandom is like being part of a special club. Hopefully you are able to find the right corner of the internet, where you and your fellow fans can geek out to your heart’s content. Social media can admittedly be a hotbed of negativity and hatred; and blocking Trump doesn’t always put an end to that mess showing up on your feed. However, a carefully cultivated social media presence can help you find your fellow nerd folk.

Some of us want to broadcast our geek pride beyond participating in our geek communities. Donning a t-shirt, dress, hoodie, etc, representing your favourite corner of geekdom can be empowering. Geek fashion can give you strength when you need it and confidence when you’re lacking. And if you’re anything like me, it can make putting pants on in the morning a bit more enjoyable (seriously, pants are the worst).

Finding geek fashion that you love can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you are in a smaller town. Sometimes chain stores like Wal-Mart will surprise, but more often than not their selection of geek apparel is lacking at best. As a result, us geeks have to turn to online retailers to get our fix. If you are new to the world of online geek shopping, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options. Jordandené

Headed by Jordan Dené, Jordandené started out by creating and selling geek aprons. The company now sells all sorts of geek products, including incredibly comfy apparel. Their clothes are geeky yet tasteful. They don’t use cheap materials or flashy graphics, instead focusing on elegant designs and wearable clothes. They also focus on sayings and slogans that make sense to everyone, geek and non-geek alike, even when taken out of context. All items are sweatshop-free, using as many eco-friendly products as possible.

Her Universe was one of the first major geek fashion brands with apparel for femmes. There were options to get your geek on before Her Universe debuted on the scene in 2010, but it was significantly harder. It’s hard to deny the impact Ashley Eckstein and her vision has had on the fashion world. These outfits are perfect for everyday cosplay, or outright cosplay depending on the outfit you choose. Personally speaking, I have a number of Her Universe dresses and sweaters. They are incredibly comfy and hold up well to the test of time.

Hot Topic; not just for goths anymore. In fact, Hot Topic recently acquired Her Universe, and sells their attire along with other geek and music-related fashions. They have something for practically every fandom, from Doctor Who to Star Wars to Harry Potter to comic book superheroes. If you live outside of the United States, shipping can be kind of pricey. They do offer free shipping incentives at times, so it’s worth keeping your eye on their site. Hot Topic is not just an online retailer either, there are tons of brick and mortar stores scattered throughout the United States and Canada.

When most of us think of ordering geeky things online, we think of Amazon first. Amazon can be a great source for finding products that aren’t available in our communities. There are a seemingly endless array of geek choices available. Be sure you read the reviews and product ratings before you order anything form an unfamiliar seller. After watching last week’s premiere, I sent that message to a few of my close friends in celebration of Bill Potts, the Doctor’s latest companion. I’ve watched the episode a few times, and I still can’t get enough of Bill. Sure, Captain Jack was unquestionably pansexual, but his limited time with the Doctor often keeps him from being considered a companion along the same lines as Rose or Donna or Clara (don’t @ me). This makes Bill the first openly gay companion*. Not only that, but this isn’t your typical questioning or coming of age story. Bill isn’t trying to figure out if she is a lesbian, she just is a lesbian.
