This DIY watercolour weekly planner is remarkably easy to make and is so pretty you’ll want to keep using it.
5 Jodie Whittaker Performances To See Before Her Doctor Who Debut
One of the most anticipated casting announcements happened earlier this year, when Jodie Whittaker was confirmed as the next Doctor – becoming the first woman to step into that role in over 50 years. While there was the expected pushback from *ahem* certain fans, others were incredibly excited. Some people even responded by expressing a new, or renewed, interest in the series. It is a huge step in the right direction for representation, and something we should celebrate. As we all impatiently await further details about Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, it’s the perfect chance to familiarize yourself with the accomplished British actress.
Recovering From The Poisonous Venom Of Dr. DarkAges
So It’s Been A While
It’s been several weeks since I worked on the website. This saddens me because it is still something I strongly believe in. So in the spirit of creating a community about celebrating the awesomeness of being a Geek I have made the difficult decision to open up about my absence while hopefully not droning on too terribly. Also in true fan style my geek love proved a vital component of my antidote.
Habitica Is My New Best Friend, Sorry Real Life Friends
Habitica Motivates You Do Anything
At least that’s what they claim on Habitica’s home page “Motivate Yourself To Do Anything” behind that statement are some 8 bit graphics of dragons being tossed out of a computer screen and also a few of the pets that are available to you in the “game”. Actually the pets they choose for the home page are the dragon and the cactus; which are total faves of mine.
How My Dad’s Love For One Canadian Band Helped Me Embrace My Inner Geek
My dad and I shared many things: incredibly dark hair, arm hair that one could braid, a love of Law & Order, and an obsession with music. Though we often commiserated or joked about those other commonalities, music was what really bonded us together. In the 90s, before digital radio displays, we would challenge each other to “name that song.” More often than not, we could get it right within seconds. Many of my favourite childhood memories involve errand running with Dad, because we would play this game in the car. Canadian bands were our specialty.
The Mystery Van Gets Supernatural
Supernatural is meeting Scooby Doo
Like Wow!
Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
Our demon hunting siblings Sam and Dean Winchester are teaming up with the mystery gang; we presume to do a little sleuthing.
Few details regarding the episode have been released yet but we at least know that Jared Padalecki (Sam) and Jensen Ackles (Dean) will be getting the animation treatment instead of an awful half cartoon half reality mash up.
I think honestly the best part of the above video is the reactions from fans on twitter.
A Supernatural Announcement
Jared and Jensen announced the Supernatural Scooby Doo crossover episode at the CW Upfronts on Thursday May 18th, 2017.
I guess when you have such a long running tv show you need to find some ways to add excitement; although I have to wonder how much serious fans appreciate gimmicky episodes.
Both actors are fathers so perhaps this will be an episode that they can share with their children.
If you are going to go the route of an animated episode I do suppose that the sleuthing mystery gang is a good match up for the monster hunters. And given that the Scooby gang’s recent antics have been brought to us courtesy of Warner Bros. Animation and Supernatural is Warner Bros. Tv Production it just makes even more sense as a crossover episode.
Time Will Tell
With few details being given about the episode so far it’s hard to decide if I’m for it or against it. Which of course means that I will have to watch to find out and that’s what it’s all about anyway.
Will you be watching to see the Winchester boys go for a ride in the Mystery Van?

How Comic Books, Sci-Fi, And Fantasy Helped Me Cope With Grief
My father passed away five years ago next week. I’m nearly 34 years old (my birthday also being next week) and had dealt with my fair share of grief over the years. This time, though, it was completely different. Grief hit me hard. I bounced back and forth between each stage randomly and unpredictably. I’d spend hours just sitting on the couch, staring off into space, reliving memories over and over again. It was though I was worried they’d fade, that I’d forget the sound of his voice or how he was the only person who could make grocery shopping fun. I had no idea how to cope, if any of what I was feeling was “normal”, and felt completely and utterly alone, despite the offers of help and shoulders from friends and family members.
Everyone deals with grief in their own unique way. Obviously, the coping techniques I had used up until this point weren’t exactly the healthiest ones. Finding strategies that work can be hard. Sometimes it takes a while before you stumble on the right ones for you. For me, pursuing my geeky interests with the goal of finding ways to heal helped. I’ll never “be okay” with a world without my dad. My step mom phrased it perfectly when she said that things wouldn’t be normal again; we just have to find a new normal now. Nothing will remove the ache that his death caused, but finding solace in comic books, sci-fi, and fantasy helped me cope.
Literature And Grief
A friend of mine at work suggested I try to lose myself in a book, thinking that a fictional world might give me a bit of an escape. Her idea was sound, but I simply didn’t have the focus for prose. I’d stare off into space, obsessively committing minor details about my dad to memory. I had started to read comic books before he passed away, but this was limited to Batwoman and Detective Comics. Afterwards, I noticed that I was able to focus long enough to read a single issue. From here, my reading branched out to include heroes and characters from multiple publishers and creators. One moment that stood out was reading an issue of Birds of Prey, in which Black Canary speaks of her mother, who, like my dad, passed away after a battle with cancer. Despite the fact that there was very little else we had in common, knowing that she persevered gave me strength. I eventually looked up Secret Origins #50 to read the story itself.
Grief is an isolating experience. Even though others around you are mourning the loss of the same person, no two people go through the same set of emotions. Navigating conflicting and confusing emotions is tricky under the best of circumstances. With the addition of loss and the type of pain that comes with it, it can be downright impossible. In times like these, many of us turn to stories to help make sense of the overwhelming feelings loss creates. Watching characters sort through similar emotions can help us process our own. Knowing that it is possible to manage grief and come through on the other side is empowering. When you are dealing with such a helpless emotion, any type of empowerment goes a long way.
Grief On The Big (And Small) Screen
One of my favourite stories about The Princess Bride involves Mandy Patinkin and his role as Inigo Montoya. While filming his part as the iconic swordsman, Patinkin was still grieving the loss of his father to cancer. The lines, “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die” and “I want my father back you son of a bitch” have since become infamous, and were directed to the cancer that killed his dad. In one interview, Patinkin elaborated, saying:
I feel that when I killed that six-fingered man, I killed the cancer that killed my father. And I remember we were outside that castle and I took a walk in this beautiful moat and I just kept talking to my dad, saying, ‘I’m gonna right it, I’m gonna right this wrong.’ And for a moment he was alive, and my fairy tale came true.
I heard this for the first time after my dad passed away, and it hit particularly close to home. Not just because The Princess Bride is the best movie ever made, but because it was one my dad and I shared. We watched that VHS tape until it wore out (they were like DVDs, but didn’t last as long and you had to rewind them). Now, whenever I’m missing my dad too much I rewatch The Princess Bride. Only instead of pretending to be Buttercup or Westley (as I usually do), I focus on Inigo. Cheering him on helps process some of those powerful feelings.
Grief as played out on the small screen can also be incredibly helpful. There is no guidebook on how to handle grief, but watching your favourite characters figure it out, in healthy and unhealthy ways, is cathartic. Anya’s inability to grasp the concept of death on Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one moment that always stands out. Those few lines capture so many emotions: sorrow, disbelief, anger, and confusion chief among them. It’s important to remind yourself that the stages of grief are not linear, nor are they mutually exclusive. Sometimes you experience them all at once, or feel yourself thrown between multiple stages. Watching other characters feel conflicted can validate your own experiences.
Finding Your Own New Normal
There is no easy way to deal with grief. There are no magical series of steps that you can take or combination of exercises that will diminish the pain. For me, embracing my inner geek was what worked. Losing myself in media that reflected this very relatable feeling against a bigger backdrop of monsters or miracles helped me process this devastating loss. Sci-fi, fantasy, and comic books were my escape from, and inspiration for dealing with, reality. For you it might be sports, or sitcoms, or myths, or stand-up comedy. Having characters you can relate to, who are dealing with similar emotions, can make you feel less alone. Sometimes you need to avoid those feelings altogether, and seeking solace in entertainment without reminders of the grief you are enduring is ideal. In other cases, seeing your emotions reflected and validated in the media you consume is exactly the small act of self care you need to continue coping. Working your way through grief is an ongoing process. There are no simple steps, nor will you ever completely heal. Things won’t “go back to normal.” But losing yourself in a story with relatable characters navigating the same complicated minefield of emotions can help you find your new normal.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Review From A Superhero Newbie
Catching Up With Guardians of the Galaxy
When I got invited by another mom to go see Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 I very eagerly said yes, because it looked awesome. Then it was brought to my attention that I had not seen Volume 1 yet. So a mere one hour before I was leaving to go see Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 I finished Volume 1.
Volume 1
Oh My God !
I had no idea what I was missing out on.
After a brief but necessary look into Peter Quill’s heartbreaking beginning the Star Lord quickly sets a different tone with his top notch dancing skills set to the soundtrack of ‘Awesome Mixed Tape #1’.
Also I want to point out that I spent the entire movie thinking that Peter would open the gift from his mother at the moment of ultimate doom and it would be something to suddenly save the galaxy. It did turn out to be a very ‘awesome’ gift but it didn’t quite save the galaxy.
Rocket the genetically and cybernetically modified raccoon is accompanied brilliantly by his tree-like humanoid Groot.
Basically all of our good guys are on the run from someone so in order to stay alive (and hopefully get rich) they must form what is at times a very uneasy alliance.
Of course our misfit heroes manage to save the day, and their journey there is chalked full of some fantastic humor. Seriously just so funny.
Some Important Endnotes
The end of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1 leaves us with some important clues into Volume 2.
As the Ravagers leave Xander, Yondu remarks that it turned out well that they did not deliver Quill to his father as contracted.
Peter Quill learns that he is only half human, his father being part of an ancient unknown species.
Star Lord finally opens the gift his mother gave him early on, and it’s ‘Awesome Mixed Tape #2’, I love this.
The Guardians of the Galaxy have their criminal records expunged and they leave together in the rebuilt Milano (Peter’s ship) with a sapling cut from Groot.
Volume 2
Spoiler – it’s hilarious and wonderful.
I really enjoyed Groot the body guard but Baby Groot is freaking adorable.
Yondu’s remark regarding Peter’s father give us some insight into the main theme of Volume 2, unravelling the mysteries of Peter’s parentage.
As Marvel Studios continues to expand their Marvel Universe prepare to accept some old foes as new friends.
Of course our now beloved ragtag heroes find themselves once again on the run from powerful beings.
To avoid giving away too much of the story before everyone has had a fair chance to watch it I won’t go too much into Volume 2, but I am thrilled to see more of Nebula.
My eagerness for Nebula is at least partly due to my fascination with Karen Gillan ever since she portrayed Amy Pond, which is a completely different fandom but I wanted to be Amy Pond.
Karen Gillan shaved her signature red locks completely off for her role as Nebula in Volume 1 and even did it on camera. She reports being grateful that for Volume 2 they only needed to shave the lower half of her head.
It is one of those rare franchises that I will be watching multiple times.
I loved it !!

5 Geeky Things In Entertainment To Be Excited About
There is no way around it; we are living in some interesting, and stressful, times. Regardless of where you lie on the political spectrum, you have to admit that things in the States are anxiety-inducing. For everyone. It is obviously incredibly important to be as politically aware as possible. Positive change can only happen when it is initiated by the informed. But it is important to take time away from the political arena as well. Having a few geeky things to look forward to can help give you a bit of a reprieve from that stress.
Thinking about things you are curious about experiencing can also help when you begin to feel helpless or hopeless. Whenever I find myself in a low spot I remember the advice Matt Fraction (writer of Sex Criminals, Hawkeye, ODY-C, among others) gave one of his fans. Fraction received a question from a fan about feeling hopeless. In his response, Fraction suggested the fan find something that could hold his curiosity; something that he was excited to learn or experience or re-experience in the future. In that light, here are a few geeky things we can all look forward to.
Wonder Woman
I’ll be honest – Wonder Woman was never my favourite superhero. Don’t get me wrong, I have always loved her. But for whatever reason I was always drawn to the lesser known heroes. Batwoman, Black Canary, and Huntress were always higher on that list. Then I read Greg Rucka’s The Hiketeia and Gail Simone’s The Circle and fell in love. At first, I found Wonder Woman to be too good and too perfect to be entertaining. Under skilled pens, however, she is complex, flawed, and still always driven to do what’s right.
Gal Gadot’s brief appearance is, without a doubt, the best part of Batman v. Superman. In my eyes, she was perfect as Diana – strong, confident, and fed up with bs. I’ve been looking forward to this movie since it was announced. The recent trailer has made me seriously wish for a TARDIS or some way to wake up and have it suddenly be June 2nd.
This Season Of ‘Doctor Who’
I’ve written at length about my love for the Doctor’s new companion, Bill Potts. Now that we are five episodes in I can say, without a doubt, that she is my new favourite companion. The team of Bill and the Twelfth Doctor is perfection. The only horrible thing about it is that it will only last one series with the departure of Peter Capaldi (the Doctor) and the rumoured departure of Pearl Mackie (Bill Potts) later this year.
Still, together they are absolute perfection. This season seems to be revisiting old plot lines, consistently enough that I wonder if it is on purpose, as part of Steven Moffat’s swan song. The mystery of the vault is another intriguing aspect of the show. Who, or what, is there? Is it the Master? Missy? The next Doctor? The first Doctor? Amy Pond from series six’s “The Girl Who Waited”? River? River-as-Melody? Susan gone rogue? While we’re at it, what’s up with Nardole? There was definitely something strange about him in this episode. Is he the Master’s new form? Is someone else’s consciousness (maybe River’s?) stored in his head? Can Nardole’s interesting comments be explained away by a fascinating former life, and the fact that now his head is attached to an artificial/nuts-and-bolts body? This geek needs to know.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Most Star Wars fans have been looking forward to The Last Jedi since before it even had a name. In fact, I bet many of us began eagerly awaiting for Episode VIII immediately following the final moments of The Force Awakens. The promotional material for this movie, from the posters to the trailers, have been amazing.
This movie will be a bit bittersweet, especially for long-time Star Wars fans. It marks Carrie Fisher’s last appearance as the iconic Princess Leia. Fisher’s tragic death last year was a blow to the film’s fans as well as its cast and crew. Seeing her grace the big screen for the last time is sure to be emotional.
Convention Season
Even if you can’t afford to go, you have to admit that convention season can be pretty exciting. For starters, there are a ton of panels to follow. There is bound to be one to match almost every fandom. Cosplay roundups are always a fun part of following any convention. Looking at the creative ideas of other likeminded geeks can inspire new cosplay ideas, or even be the starting point for some fantastic fanfic.
The announcements are the other huge perk of convention season. Comic book companies and production companies often wait until there is a huge panel before making major announcements. These may include titles or release dates for upcoming films, casting announcements, book launches, and creative changes. For the nerd-at-heart, convention season is like Christmas.
The Defenders
The last season of Daredevil was so-so and Iron Fist was barely watchable. Still, I, and many other likeminded geeks, are incredibly excited for this series to begin. Why, you may ask? Well, for starters:
And also:
The series will follow Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist as they fight (villains and seemingly one another) to save New York City. Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and Finn Jones reprise their respective roles. We can probably expect to see an episode or two of “I work better alone” monologues and sullen looks, but after this, the series looks like it will be amazing.
Wynonna Earp Is Bad Ass, And Purgatory Is In Canada
Wynonna Earp Shines A Spotlight On Canada
So if you were to google Wynonna Earp it would tell you that it is an American-Canadian series, and the Black Badge division of the Us Marshals does play a role as a cross border task force. But….Space Channel airing Wynonna Earp has actually brought it to a Canadian audience; which is pretty exciting since Purgatory is in Canada.
I mean let’s be real Canada is not one of the most represented countries on television, so there’s something pretty awesome about the small town local Sheriff telling Agent Xavier Dolls that he’s been on the phone with Washington and Ottawa. Officer Haught also curiously delivers a package from CSIS.
Wynonna Earp Gives Us The Wild West With An Edge
Very early on I want to warn anyone who hasn’t seen it that there one overly gory scene in every episode.
So if like me you happen to be a little squeamish or prone to nightmares make sure that you are able to fast forward or at least be prepared to cover your eyes and ears.
With that out of the way, let me tell you that it is frigging awesome.
At some point before I started watching for myself my husband told me that it was being described as Buffy meets Supernatural, and it’s a pretty spot on description; I kind of wish that I knew where to assign credit.
Wynonna Earp Always Leaves Us With A Cliffhanger
At the end of every episode I want see the next episode as soon as possible because I really want to know what happens next. I have a genuine curiosity to see where the story will go. The team behind Wynonna Earp has done an excellent job of making us care about what happens to our core group of misfits. I would not reccomend getting too attached to some of the others.
Our main misfits include the title character Wynonna Earp (Melanie Scrofano), her younger sister Waverly Earp (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), plucked right from the old time Wild West Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), and Agent Xavier Dolls (Shamier Anderson). A special note about Officer Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell) I love the character and her relationship with Waverly, not to give away too many important details, so I hope that she continues to be featured as key player.
The Making Of Wynonna Earp
Wynonna Earp is an Original Canadian Series based on the Graphic Novel Series written by Beau Smith and released by IDW Publishing. The Tv show and Graphic Novel Series both share the name of their main Demon Hunter Wynonna Earp.
The Tv Series is brought to life by Showrunner and Executive Producer Emily Andras.
Space is the Canadian Production Partner of Calgary Producer SEVEN24 Films. Session 2 which was recently nominated for 6 Canadian Screen Awards is currently in production in Calgary.
And just to up the badassness of it all Emily Andras herself is Canadian, being an Alumnus of Queen’s University and RTA School of Media at Ryerson University.
The characters of Wynonna, Doc, Agents Dolls, and Officer Haught are also all Canadian Actors.
I could not be more impressed with the series and I hope they continue to WOW me in the second season.
I am eagerly awaiting more episodes, it’s a nice to see a badass heroine and the Canadian touch is very welcome.
Geeks Out,
