It’s Wednesday! That means a new batch of comic books, trade paperbacks, and graphic novels are coming your way. At Geeks in Art, we know it can be hard to keep up with weekly series, as much as you may want. Thankfully, you can still enjoy your favourite stories through trade paperbacks and graphic novels.

While there are a ton coming out this week, there are three in particular that we are incredibly excited to pick up. While we do include the links to Amazon copies, remember that you can always order these books through your local library, local bookstore, or local comic book store. If you are in Kingston, you can check out  Kingston Gaming NexusAction Packed Comics, or SBT Comics and Games for these books and many, many more.

American Gods Volume 1: Shadow

Paperbacks

Dark Horse

Written by: Neil Gaiman and P. Craig Russel
Art by: Scott Hampton, P. Craig Russell, Walt Simonson, Colleen Doran, and Glenn Fabry
Colours by: Lovern Kindzierski, Laura Martin, Colleen Doran, Adam Brown

While we start out again this week with another Neil Gaiman modern-day classic, I promise we will cover other writers! American Gods Volume 1: Shadow is a must have for anyone who is a fan of fantasy, Neil Gaiman, or the show American Gods. In addition to being a beautiful retelling of American Gods through the comic medium, this hardcover graphic novel also contains cover art from variant covers by Becky Cloonan, Skottie Young, Fabio Moon, and Dave McKean. It’s a stunning, fascinating, absorbing read that cannot be missed.

Crosswind: Volume 1

Image Comics

Written by: Gail Simone
Art by: Cat Staggs

Frequently described as Goodfellas meets Freaky Friday, Crosswind is the story of a housewife and a hitman who switch positions, with potentially deadly consequences. Gail Simone is an incredible writer, known for her work on Batgirl, Secret Six, Deadpool, and Birds of Prey. Just as amazing as the story is the artwork by Cat Staggs, known for her prior work on Adventures of Supergirl, Smallville Season 11, and Wonder Woman ’77. Each page is its own work of art. You’ll want to pick up Volume 1 as soon as you can, as this work has already been optioned for television, and you definitely want to be the one in your group who can tell others how you were a fan before it was on TV.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Volume 7, I’ve Been Waiting for a Squirrel Like You

Marvel

Written by: Ryan North
Art by: Erica Henderson

Squirrel Girl is one of Marvel’s most consistently enjoyable titles. Everything from the humorous storytelling to the fantastic artwork makes each trade so much fun to read. This volume sees Doreen and her friend Nancy enter a tech competition, with a strange and unusual prize at the end. Teasers for the volume promise dinosaurs, with the possibility of one or two Squirrel Girl vs. Dino match-ups. If you’re as sick of the state of the world and want something enjoyable, and slightly meta, to read, do yourself a favour and pick up Volume 7, I’ve Been Waiting For a Squirrel Like You.

Those are the works that we are most looking forward to this week. Have we missed your favourite? Is there a title we should read that we keep missing? Don’t let us live in the dark! Let us know your thoughts.
