We Adore Geek Weddings
So themed weddings are huge these days; which we love.
And Geek Weddings are a pretty big deal in the world of themed weddings, just ask Pinterest (We LOVE this even more).
I am very biased towards the Geek Weddings, as my own wedding featured a Harry Potter Golden Snitch wedding band set and a very Doctor Who themed reception.
The Appeal Of Geek Weddings
For many years weddings were thought to be about the bride and for the bride.
Even my husband expressed this thought once a long time ago before marriage was on our horizon, of course.
Truth be told though, even a lot of brides to be are not all about that bling. There are a lot of people who want a fairy tale wedding but not that pretty fluffed up version. When we dream about castles, we dream of dragons, mythical beasts, wizards and warlocks. When I imagine a tv couple that I want to be, it is Rory and Amy Pond hands down, Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming, not so much.
Traditionally it was difficult to represent that other fairy tale because what was available to the masses was much more Disney than Camelot.
Technology For The Handcrafted Win
It is a great time to be a Geek in terms of easy access to Geek Themed ANYTHING.
This enables you to really personalize your special day and include aspects that represent the things that you love. This has made weddings a lot more interesting. Depending on the couple, you may just be treated to a choreographed lightsaber routine in place of the first dance.
Etsy and Pinterest have opened up endless possibilities for personalized and handmade items.
I used Amazon to buy Doctor Who Edition Yahtzee games as centerpieces. And pre-amazon days it would have been much more difficult to get my hands on eight of them.
I had been strongly considering terrariums with a TARDIS ornament inside but in the end the ease of just opening a box won out over the idea of making several mini gardens.
My laziness payed off, the TARDIS Yahtzee games were a huge hit, and there were none left after the reception.
3D Printing being more accessible has also been a big development for Geek Weddings. Making things like our Just Married TARDIS cake topper possible. Back in the olden days those things were not easily available because not that many companies could afford to produce or stock such niche items. Now though, it’s possible to post available designs online, but not actually produce the item until someone orders it. That is a huge plus because it removes the risk for the provider making them likely to offer more designs that cover anything from Doctor Who to Mickey Mouse.
Speaking from my experience the best parts of wedding planning were when we found ways to represent how much we enjoy Doctor Who. Another special moment was seeing my Dad arrive wearing a red bow tie, just like The Doctor. As an artist and a geek I love out of the box, so I will always encourage embracing your individuality. Of course you don’t need a wedding to enjoy fun fandom items.

Guest book alternatives that tie into a wedding theme are becoming increasingly popular, we’ve seen a few like the one above that have notes from guests inside a suitcase!
