My Child Wants To Share Books – And Ones I’ll Like

A Natural Love Of Books

So recently my daughter turned 11.  I was a little on edge because we see little cracks of teenager peeking through once and a while. Somewhere in the last few years gifts have become more electronic than whimsical. Thankfully reading has come naturally to my little lovely, and she enjoys it.  So I have always been able to add some books into the mix for good measure. Graphic novels were an important part of early reading for her.

Baby Mouse, Jem and Holograms, and Adventure Time were favourites of hers.

So the local comic shop recommended a book for her.

It didn’t have the graphics but he thought the storyline might appeal to her.

That book was Star Princess and it was a game changer, this teenage princess from another planet running away from her triant king of a father and forming a rebellion.  Now I’m not going to say that the storyline is especially original but it was interesting enough that after she read the book she continued to carry it with her for months.  In case she needed a little reprieve from reality.  This by the way is a habit of mine and has been for years, I’m curious to see what books she will carry as her safety blanket in the years to come.

Moving to more mature content

Now that we have widen our book interest to include full novels she is choosing books that I would also choose.  She borrowed the first Hunger Games from the school library and it’s just been evolving from there.  For Christmas and her birthday she received several books.  As an added bonus she asked me if I would also like to read her books so that we talk about them! That’s right I’m in an unofficial book club with my 11 year old, and I am thrilled.

Some Titles from our current list of books

The Magician’s Nephew, from The Chronicles of Narina

Divergent

Hunger Games Series

Cat Warriors

I am Malala

A couple of these I have already read but I will read them again to make sure they are fresh in the my mind for our talks.

I am actually over the moon to share these stories with her.

Here’s to raising a Geek,

xoxo Mimi
