Month: February 2017
And DryFeb Closes With A Sober Birthday, Not Mine Though
About Dry Feb
Dry Feb is a fundraiser that challenges you to go booze-free for a month to support the Canadian Cancer Society. It helps you get healthy and clear your head while also raising funds for an important cause.
Dry Feb takes a light-hearted approach to raising funds for a serious issue. You don’t often get the chance to raise money for charity by not doing something! It is a challenge of determination that rewards participants with a great sense of achievement and feeling of wellbeing.
Taking part in Dry Feb also gives you the chance to focus on yourself – notice your own drinking habits and the value of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. The sobering news is that alcohol is one of the top three causes of cancer deaths worldwide. Last year, it is estimated that as many as 10,700 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer linked to their alcohol consumption. Dry Heroes are supported by an online community of other participants, providing advice, help and encouragement throughout the challenge. (from https://www.dryfeb.ca/about)
Three Weeks Into Canadian Cancer Society’s DryFeb
DryFeb and my three week update on staying sober for a cause
The Cause
By now maybe you know The Canadian Cancer Society has started an initiative called DryFeb, if not it can be found here online.
And so far 2,476 participants are staying sober for a cause. In exchange for getting through Super Bowl without a pint of beer and Valentine’s day without a nice glass of red wine we are soliciting our friends and family for donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, so far totalling $98,029.
We are at the completion of our third week of being sober for a cause.
How To Support Your Friend In The Arts, Even If You’re Broke
Having an artist as a friend is one of the greatest gifts life can give. Artists see things in new and interesting ways, are outside-the-box thinkers, and usually a lot of fun to be around. You may have friends in any one of the arts, from writing to painting to crafting to acting to comedy to other forms of creation. The arts make a valuable contribution to society. They lift people up when they are down and provide a release for so many difficult emotions. The arts give us a way to celebrate joy while processing sorrow. They are invaluable.

Make Good Art: The Many Benefits Of Creating ‘A Thing’
A few months ago, Neil Gaiman released a collection of essays and other works of non-fiction. This work, called The View From The Cheap Seats, was hotly anticipated by many fans, myself included. I was lucky enough to have a copy gifted to me, by a then-stranger (Steve Cleff, a kind human being and an amazing artist). The work is filled with insightful, interesting, and sometimes humours essays and observations on the world. However, the main draw for me, and the work I re-read time and time again, is Make Good Art. Make Good Art is the text of a commencement speech given by Neil Gaiman in 2012. The whole speech/transcript is filled with quotable phrases, but one in particular stands out:
Life is sometimes hard. Things go wrong, in life an din love and in business and in friendship and in health and in all the other ways that life can go wrong. And when things get tough, this is what you should do.
Make good art.
I’m Dry This February
I can’t think of anyone who’s heart has not been broken by the devil known as Cancer.
And I’m really not sure that anyone needs extra convincing that we need to make headway in our treatments so given the opportunity to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, who would turn that down?
Also I personally have had my life, family and friendships affected by alcoholism.
It’s a horrible thing to watch someone you love fall deeper in the bottle without a way to drag to them out.
