Dragons Can Be Defeated | Geeks In Art

While I had always been interested in superheroes and science fiction, it was fairy tales that pushed me to explore other geeky interests. I loved stories based on fairy tales, or featuring those fantasy-style villains. As a pre-teen fairy tales were especially influential – both in the types of books I chose and the television I watched.

Like most adolescents in the 90s, I devoured every Lurlene McDaniel book as soon as it was released, and I eagerly awaited each installment of the Fear Street series. But I also read fair tale retellings, which eventually led to historical fiction. Through historical fiction I read works like There Will Be Wolves, The True Confessions Of Charlotte Doyle, and The Nine Days Queen, all of which gave me a hunger for more strong yet flawed female heroes. Hello, Sweeties | Geeks In Art

Hello!

As I embark on this new journey I am ever aware that it is being witnessed by not only my whole family and a world of strangers; but most important, there is a pre-teen girl watching very closely.

I hope that while she’s watching she decides to pay attention and take notice of what geek culture is really celebrating. I hope she enjoys finding ways of incorporating her fandom into her daily life as much as I do, drawer of fan tee-shirts I’m looking at you, and the instant bound with anyone who understands the reference. Welcome to Geeks in Art!

Welcome to the launch of Geeks in Art, a place for geeks to gather and celebrate how amazing geek culture can be. Our aim is to create a community of like-minded geeks; a place for us to gather and share how we’ve managed to use geekdom as a guiding light.

My name’s Ashley, and I’ll be the primary author of the blog (though Mimi will be dropping by from time to time). My introduction to geek culture came quite young, in the form of She-Ra, Batman, and Transformers cartoons. It wasn’t until much later in life that I truly embraced my inner geek and let her fly. I’ve found inspiration in stories from across the genre, from comic books to sci-fi shows to films to blockbuster franchises. I’m able to express my passion for geek culture best by writing about it, and encouraging others to find the same hope I found.

The topics will range from inspirational posts, aimed at lifting those who are down, to humorous stories about day-to-day life. You can also find stories about everyone’s horrid Aunt Ida and supportive Uncle Jesse, how-to guides, reviews, and gift suggestions for everyone on your list. Feel free to drop us a line and suggest a topic as well, if there is something you are dying to see covered.

While this blog will be one way in which we celebrate the joy of being a geek, we also have many gift items available for sale. Mimi Moe, co-founder and artist, has designed and crafted a puntastic and geeky gifts for fans across geek culture. We encourage you to check out the store on this site, as well as our Etsy store, to see what we have in stock. Her designs are available on multiple items, and she does accept commissions. Feel free to send her an email to discuss a custom creation for the geek in your life.
